New York’s highest court has ruled in favor of a woman whose 2-year-old granddaughter died from falling building debris, allowing the grandmother to go forward with an emotional-distress claim against the building’s owner.

Susan Frierson was with her granddaughter outside a building in Manhattan’s Upper West Side when they were struck by falling debris in 2015, according to court documents. The young child, Greta Devere Greene, died the next day, the documents said.
