When you marry someone, you marry their problems—which believe it or not might actually go a long way towards explaining some of the hiccups that a new study released by Merrill Corporation indicates are currently facing mergers and acquisitions.

Out of 500 dealmakers surveyed across Europe, Africa and the Middle East, 66 percent believe that the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will heighten the scrutiny of those evaluating a target company’s data protection procedures and policies. For businesses everywhere holding the data of private EU citizens, this means that the target company’s approach to compliance now matters as much as their sales tag.
