For those looking to combat the growth of “fake news” content on social media, Facebook Inc.’s purchase of Bloomsbury AI, a natural language processing technology startup that can automatically flag fraudulent content online, was a welcome bit of news. But for those in the legal industry, the acquisition represented a missed opportunity.

Bloomsbury AI was one of the startups participating in Allen & Overy’s Fuse incubator for legal and regulatory technology companies before it moved to Facebook. Though Allen & Overy does not invest in most startups in Fuse, it does aim to develop their platforms for use among its legal staff and the broader legal industry.
