Oscar-winning filmmaker Paul Haggis shouldn’t have to pay his winning courtroom adversary $3 million in attorney fees and costs—on top of the $10 million civil rape verdict against him—his lawyers claim, arguing in sharply worded court papers that the fee request was “excessive” and “unreasonable.”

Manhattan jurors in a 2022 trial found Haggis—who wrote “Million Dollar Baby” and directed “Crash”—liable for $10 million for the 2013 rape of Haleigh Breest, an entertainment industry publicist.
