Slog it out as an associate, make partner by 36 and then either burn out, gracefully step aside early enough for a second career, or receive a not-so-gentle nudge in the direction of the door 20 years later. Assuming you’ve picked a practice area that doesn’t completely tank, that’s the partnership deal, right? Preferably with a bit of a time for raising a family somewhere green but not too far off the beaten track and with decent links into the office 364 days a year.
