Dramatic changes have taken place in the Icelandic media markets during the last few years. Prior to 1986, Icelandic State Radio had a monopoly by law in both radio and TV. At that time at least five daily papers were published, three were published directly or indirectly by political parties and two, the most successful, were nominally independent of political parties.
