Founded in 1844, Lehman Brothers started as a small business in Montgomery, Alabama, before growing through railroad bonds, private placements and the funding of internet start-ups, such as Intel, into the global financial powerhouse that it is today. The firm is headquartered in New York, London and Tokyo and operates in a network of offices around the world employing more than 12,000 people.

The legal department in Europe is headed by Piers Le Marchant, who has worked for the organisation for 12 years. He joined from Nomura International where he set up the first legal department. At Lehman Brothers, the lawyers are organised exactly like the traders. They sit alongside each other on the trading floor. They have the same desks, the same screens and same number of telephones.
