A Legal Week straw poll of 10 top US firms in London suggested two weeks ago that they were preparing to call a truce on assistant pay.
City firms will no doubt have breathed a sigh of relief as firms such as Latham & Watkins, McDermott Will & Emery and Shearman & Sterling confirmed that they would restrict salary increases by moving their assistants up to the next band, rather than increasing the bands themselves.
