The Japanese legal market has taken a step towards liberalisation with the setting up of a panel of foreign lawyers to examine proposals for further deregulation.
Following a report by the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) the Government’s Judicial Reform Council is putting together a team of foreign lawyers to study its recommendations. The main proposal is that foreign law firms be allowed to merge with Japanese firms, allowing integrated local legal advice.
