  • CC's US arm wins defence for ING in class action suit

    Clifford Chance's (CC's) US litigation team has successfully defended ING Life Insurance in a class action suit in the Washington DC court of appeals. The privacy case, which had been brought on behalf of Washington DC government employees alleging that ING lost their private, sensitive financial and personal information, was dismissed last month (18 June) with the court ruling in favour of the insurer.

  • BLP boosts finance and litigation with hire of partners from A&O and CC

    Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) has picked up two partners from the magic circle, with the firm set to bolster its finance and litigation practices. Clifford Chance (CC) litigation partner Nic Fletcher will join BLP's international arbitration practice while, as legalweek.com reported last week (26 June), Allen & Overy (A&O) leveraged finance partner Andrew Bamber is also set to join the firm.

  • Fourth CC litigation partner joins Gibson Dunn in New York

    Gibson Dunn & Crutcher has recruited another Clifford Chance (CC) partner in New York, a move which means the US firm has now taken on 11 litigation lawyers from CC during the past month. CC litigation partner George Schieren, who resigned from the US practice earlier this month, has joined CC's global head of litigation Mark Kirsch, litigation partner Joel Cohen and counsel Christopher Joralemon at Gibson Dunn, with the US firm confirming that it has also recruited seven associates from CC.

  • Linklaters partner duo to head up China practice

    Linklaters has appointed a partner duo to head up its China practice, with Asia litigation head and Hong Kong managing partner Marc Harvey and Beijing head Celia Lam replacing Zili Shao in the role. Harvey and Lam take up their four-year terms with immediate effect after Shao was appointed as Asia managing partner in April.

    Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) is to bolster its finance practice with the hire of high profile Allen & Overy (A&O) leveraged finance partner Andrew Bamber. Bamber is set to join BLP over the coming weeks after seven years as a partner in A&O's leveraged finance team. He came over to the magic circle firm in 2002 from Norton Rose as part of a team of four partners to leave the firm, including current leveraged finance chief Tim Polglase.

    The air cargo price-fixing litigation looks promising from a plaintiffs lawyer's perspective. Since US and European antitrust authorities raided the offices of more than a dozen airlines in February 2006, settlements and fines have been racking up. The US Department of Justice has levied more than $1.6bn (£1bn) in fines against 15 airlines and air cargo companies. In 2006, Deutsche Lufthansa settled claims from a class of US plaintiffs for $85m (£54m). Class actions against other airlines are pending in the US and Australia.
