A nine-partner team has joined Baker Botts' Washington DC office today (16 March) which includes Howrey's former vice chair Sean Boland - who also co-headed the antitrust practice at the firm. The team comprises a total of 32 lawyers, as well as economists, analysts and support staff. Additional lawyers and staff are expected to join Baker Botts in the coming weeks.

The firm has recruited two partners from US rival McDermott Will & Emery to launch the new base. Brussels-based duo Philip Torbol and Patrice Corbiau have been handed a remit to build up the firm's offering in the Belgian capital, although the specific number of laterals the firm plans to recruit is as yet unconfirmed. The new office opening is a part of the US firm's aggressive expansion strategy for Europe. The firm has launched six European offices in rapid succession, with a London base opened in 2005, Paris in 2008, Frankfurt in 2009, and Moscow and Warsaw in 2010.

Two Linklaters competition partners have left the firm's Stockholm and Hong Kong offices to set up their own boutique in Sweden. The new boutique, launched by Stockholm partner Kent Karlsson and Hong Kong partner Erik Soederlind, went live yesterday (1 November) under the name Kastell. Both partners joined Linklaters' Swedish competition practice in 2001 through its merger with local firm Lagerloef & Leman. Soederlind later relocated to the firm's Hong Kong office in 2008 to become head of competition and antitrust in Asia - a position he held at the time of his departure.

Does the global litigation law firm model work? This disturbing question has been explicitly raised this month by news of a 12-partner exodus from the European network of disputes and intellectual property (IP) specialist Howrey. Indeed, departing partners from Howrey, who are heavily concentrated in the firm's Amsterdam and Brussels offices, have made much of the problems of working within a US-based firm. The argument goes that the US' generally stricter conflicts rules are a real hurdle for litigators operating in Europe, particularly when the bulk of the practice is weighted stateside, which makes it inevitable that American clients will get the upper hand in a close call on conflicts.
