As the first woman—and the first American—to serve as the President of the ICC International Court of Arbitration in its 100-year history, I knew that this job would present unique challenges and expectations. I was determined to do things differently, while always being true to myself and the goals of the institution.

The ICC Court is recognized as the world’s most preferred arbitral institution, trusted by businesses, states and state-owned enterprises in 150 countries to help resolve their commercial disputes. As the only truly international and independent arbitral institution, ICC has played a seminal role in making arbitration the preferred method for resolving disputes between parties from any country. My predecessors made bold moves to assure that our dispute resolution services evolved to meet the changing needs of business. These included opening case management offices around the world to build a global community through local engagement.
