There is another pay war going on in the U.K.’s top tier commercial legal industry that beggars belief. Yes, that’s right, it was only a few months since the last load of salary increases.

Allen & Overy this week increased its pay for newly-qualified associates to a base rate of £107,500, up from £100,000. This keeps it level with Linklaters, which kicked off the latest rises in September. Remember, incidentally, that two years ago it was Linklaters complaining about such wars. The then managing partner Gideon Moore said: “If there are future hikes, they won’t be coming from Linklaters.” How times have changed.
