Hogan Lovells' Houston managing partner Thad Dameris is part of a four-partner team poached by Arnold & Porter, as the US firm launches in the Texan city.

Arnold & Porter opened its Houston office on Wednesday (22 January). The move gives the firm its seventh base in the US and ninth office globally.

The firm said the move would allow it to serve clients in the region in a more cost-effective way.

The Hogan Lovells team includes four litigation partners, two of whom are seasoned trial lawyers.

Dameris, who will lead the new office, is a complex commercial disputes lawyer with a focus on the energy and transportation sectors. He is joined by trial lawyer Christopher Odell and aviation and healthcare-focused litigator Trevor Jeffries.

Also moving is Washington DC-based David Weiner, who has experience of class actions in a variety of industries, as well as complex commercial litigation in the federal courts.

"We see significant opportunities to build in Houston based on our existing strengths and our experience in the region," commented Arnold & Porter's chairman Tom Milch. "We are targeting growth of practices in Houston that help us continue to provide sophisticated service to clients, in the energy sector and elsewhere."

"Clients will immediately benefit from the combined strengths of our team, including in business and patent litigation, antitrust, environmental, product liability, government contracts and national security, among others," added Dameris.

Last November, Hogan Lovells lost another major team in its international network, when the firm's eight-partner, 30 lawyer Berlin office decamped to Morrison & Foerster.
