Quartet of firms lead on second-largest IPO of the year so far

Four international firms have landed roles on Metallurgical Corporation of China's (MCC's) initial public offering (IPO) - the second-largest listing of the year so far. The $5.2bn (£3.2bn) raised from the sale of shares on the Shanghai and Hong Kong exchanges makes MCC the second-largest IPO this year after the $7.4bn (£4.6bn) raised by China State Construction Engineering Corporation in July.

Slaughters and Freshfields take roles on major Hong Kong IPOs

Slaughter and May and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer are among a number of international law firms to have picked up mandates on two major Hong Kong Stock Exchange listings which closed this week. China's largest pharmaceutical company, Sinopharm, raised HK$8.73bn (£688m), while Metallurgical Corp raised HK$18.2bn (£1.4bn) from the listings, which together dwarfed the initial public offering (IPO) activity to have taken place on the Hong Kong exchange so far this year.

CC names Amsterdam chief as new Moscow managing partner

Clifford Chance (CC) has appointed Amsterdam head Jan ter Haar as its new Moscow managing partner, after Michael Cuthbert announced his plans to retire from the firm at the end of the year. Ter Haar has headed up CC's Amsterdam office since 2004, before which he led the local capital markets practice. The firm cited his strength in banking as a factor for his appointment as Moscow head, as it is a key focus for the office.

A&O boosts India links as capital markets partner joins referral firm

Allen & Overy (A&O) is set to strengthen its relationship with India's Trilegal as the referral firm takes on a partner from the magic circle firm. Capital markets partner Srinivas Parthasarathy is to leave A&O's Singapore office to take up a new position as a partner in Trilegal's Mumbai office at the start of October. He will head the capital markets group at the Indian firm.

Linklaters takes top spot in Euro debt and equity capital markets rankings

Linklaters has topped the Thomson Reuters European debt and equity capital markets rankings, advising managers on twice as many equity deals over the first half of 2009 as its nearest rival and overtaking Allen & Overy (A&O) in the debt rankings. The magic circle firm advised underwriters on 21 European equity capital markets (ECM) deals worth $36.9bn (£22.2bn) during the first six months of this year, with key deals including a role advising JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs on HSBC's £12.5bn rights issue - the largest so far this year.

Wall Street leader Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton's London arm has scored a role as India's Tata Steel raised around $500m (£306m) through the sale of global depository receipts (GDR) and an associated listing on the London Stock Exchange. The deal is the biggest Indian GDR listing in London and the largest capital raising by a company outside its domestic market on any European exchange so far this calendar year.
