The end of a veteran court official’s long career in public service, and a judge’s sentence on Friday for her to pay a hefty fine, was based on a single Jan. 12, 2016 phone call.

Melissa Ringel, a former court attorney for the Manhattan-based Appellate Division, First Department who was convicted earlier this month on a misdemeanor charge of official misconduct, said at her sentencing on Friday that the call eight years ago with attorneys Nick Akerman and Edward Feldman has replayed in her head on a near-daily basis.
