Cravath, Swaine & Moore announced Tuesday that it is donating $6 million to various civil rights organizations, funded by fees awarded to the firm from its four-decade-long pro bono class action lawsuit on behalf of Black and women workers in Alabama.

The case, United States v. Jefferson County, was first brought by the NAACP in 1974 alongside a group of Black and female plaintiffs, who alleged they were being discriminated by several government employers in Jefferson County. Of the 1,000 employees in the police and fire departments at the time, just one was Black and there were no women.
