The ceremony culminated with the City of London Law Society Lifetime Achievement Award, which went to Charles Plant, who steps down as chair of the Solicitors Regulation Authority this month.

Plant, who was previously a litigation and arbitration partner at legacy Herbert Smith, said he was proud that Herbert Smith had played a major role in the successful campaign for solicitors to be given the right to appear as advocates in the higher courts, and hailed the fact that five solicitors became QCs this year.
