The UK legal sector has been highlighted by the Government as one of a number of professions becoming increasingly socially exclusive. A Cabinet Office report led by Alan Milburn MP has found that more than half of the UK's legal profession were independently educated, with this figure increasing to two-thirds of servicing judges. The Panel on Fair Access to the Professions' first paper looking at the trends and issues relating to access to the top professions found this figure compared with only 7% of the UK population going to public school until the age of 16.
