If there is a major candle shortage near Fleet Street this month it’s not because Freshfields has switched off the office lights in a bid to push profitability up even more; no, the firm will instead be celebrating the birthday of one of its founding fathers – Arved Deringer, who turned 95 on 4 June.

The competition law pioneer will be raising a glass of medicinal tonic to honour his status as the last living German to donate his name to a global law firm (it says here), with the firm throwing a monster bash in Cologne.
