January was a bad month for under-performing solicitors. On 1 January, 2008, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) put into effect a new policy giving greater publicity to adverse regulatory decisions, and on 31 January the Legal Complaints Service (LCS) opened a consultation about the publication of solicitors’ complaints records.

One can certainly complain about the profession’s record in reacting to this sort of initiative. The SRA’s new policy followed a consultation in January 2007 that received only 35 answers. Hopefully, greater numbers will respond to the LCS’s consultation (the deadline is 24 April, 2008).
