DuPont’s legal team has generated almost as much money as it has spent since the beginning of 2004 following a drive by the US chemicals giant to aggressively pursue lawsuits and seek licences from companies using its patents.

The company’s 195-strong legal team estimates that it has generated $630m (£307m) of revenues in the three-and-a-half-year period, $290m (£141m) of which was brought in over the last 12 months. A large part of the most recent revenue came from a $92m (£45m) asbestos settlement with more than a dozen insurers.
