At the time of writing, the home nations had not exactly covered themselves in glory at the Rugby World Cup, having laboured to patience-sapping wins against the likes of Portugal and Georgia while losing to any teams from countries that have actually played rugby before.

However, Scotland was this month celebrating a rare sporting success (let’s face it – their footballers winning against France was a fluke) in the Lawyers’ Rugby World Cup, also held in France as the main event swung into gear.
