Early on in my new role, I asked our chief executive officer (CEO) what he saw as my number one priority. His response was: “The primary role of a leader is to attract truly great people and then develop the hell out of them. As a leader, the general counsel should be no exception.”

When a CEO uses the phrase “people are our most valuable assets”, what he or she really means is that great people are a company’s most valuable resources. This is because the world’s most successful companies are those that are recognised, not for the products they sell or the businesses they are in, but rather for attracting extraordinary people who produce sustainable results.
