For companies in certain sectors, disputes are a fact of life, for others, a one-off event or accusation can threaten their reputation or even survival, leading to high-stakes litigation. This award seeks to recognise those that deal with litigation as the price of business as well as companies that have had to deal with unexpected hurdles in the road.

Collins Stewart’s long-running defamation case against the Financial Times over allegations made in its pages by a former employee was settled in January on the first day of its High Court hearing. The settlement, which was hammered out the night before, saw the FT award Collins Stewart £300,000 in damages and publish an apology on the front page of its Companies and Markets section, which was regarded as an excellent result for the company.
