Judges will be able to quit their posts and return to private practice under proposals announced by the Government this week. The move, overseen by the Department for Constitutional Affairs (DCA), is the latest step by Whitehall to increase diversity in the judiciary and means judges could join law firms as partners or practise as barristers. A DCA consultation paper has been published which includes provisions for a ‘quarantine’ period before a judge could return to private practice. The consultation period ends on 8 December.
