When Chris Parker joined software giant Microsoft two years ago he was well used to run-ins with regulators. “I had been there, bought the T-shirt and got the scars from dealing with regulators,” he explains over a coffee at Micro-soft’s UK headquarters in Reading.

In 1997, when he was UK legal counsel at the Digital Equipment Company (DEC), Parker played an instrumental role in settling a European Commission (EC) investigation into the company.
