Clifford Chance (CC) has scooped a lead role on a $4bn (£2.2bn) African energy project in one of the largest power deals yet agreed on the continent. The venture is the largest-ever energy project in the sub-Saharan region and will create an integrated coal mine and power station in the Mmamabula coal fields of Botswana.

CC is lead counsel to CIC Energy Corp, the Canadian-owned energy company that signed up as lead coordinator for the project in 2005, with the London giant fielding a team under Paris-based partner Anthony Giustini and Frankfurt partner Nick Wong.
