Herbert Smith’s Richard Fleck has been placed on a list of the Fortune 1,000′s most respected lawyers – rubbing shoulders with the likes of Sullivan & Cromwell chairman Rodgin Cohen and Cravath Swaine & Moore deputy presiding partner Evan Chesler.

The survey, conducted by BTI Consulting, quizzed more than 200 general counsel from the US’ largest corporations and came up with a list of 134 most highly-rated lawyers.

Fleck, Herbert Smith’s global relationship partner, was the only lawyer on the list not based in the US and not to come from a US law firm. He specialises in competition and regulation and his clients include Time Warner, Stagecoach, Virgin and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Fleck joins some of the most famous names in the US legal sector, including Cohen, Chesler, Davis Polk & Wardwell’s M&A co-head George Bason, Fried Frank Harris Shriver & Jacobson’s senior partner, Arthur Fleischer, and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett’s litigation chief, Charles Koob.

BTI president Michael Rynowecer told Legal Week: “Each year, only a small number of attorneys based outside the US stand out from our survey. This proves that extraordinary client service crosses borders, and clients will seek the attorneys that go above and beyond.”

The findings follow on from BTI’s flagship law firm survey, which generally places national firms such as Sidley Austin Brown & Wood, Jones Day, King & Spalding and Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw higher than New York’s elite due to their relationship work, rather than just work on the premium deals.

The individual lawyer poll also saw a strong showing from non-New York firms such as Jones Day, Goodwin Proctor, Reed Smith, Baker Botts and Steptoe & Johnson.
