Undoubtedly, the biggest news in Central Europe this year was the accession of three of the region’s largest states – Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic – plus the smaller jurisdictions of Slovakia and Slovenia, to the European Union (EU).
The move had been trailed as the most seismic development for the European economy in decades.
