Fresh doubts have been raised over the Law Society’s ability to regulate the City as Chancery Lane this week refused to launch an investigation into Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer’s controversial role in the bid battle for Marks & Spencer (M&S).

A spokesman confirmed the society had no plans to review Freshfields’ role on the bid, which ended last week after the Court of Appeal upheld an injunction barring the firm from advising retail tycoon Philip Green on the grounds of a potential conflict of interest.
