Oil giants Shell and BP have emerged as the biggest employers of in-house legal counsel, employing between them nearly a third of all the lawyers working at FTSE 100 companies.

According to a recent corporate counsel survey by the International Financial Law Review, Shell employs 623 lawyers compared with BP’s 385. The numbers give Shell almost as many lawyers as its lead adviser Slaughter and May, which has 728 lawyers. The total number of lawyers working at FTSE 100 companies was found to be around 3,660.
