The holy grail of widespread provision of e-billing by law firms took a big step forward this month when the Legal IT Innovaters Group (LITIG) announced the adoption of a new data standard for transmitting financial information.

The new standard, named the LITIG 2004 (e-billing) standard, will mean that law firms will be able to provide standardised information on client bills and the progress of work, whichever IT and software systems they, and their clients, are using. It will also mean that in-house legal department will be able to keep tabs on all their panel firms using a standard, and therefore comparable, set of criteria.
