Back in my college days, when I was searching for that elusive training contract, I must confess I did not consider a career in-house. Instead, my aspirations lay in the traditional route of qualifying – training in private practice and one day making it as a high-flyer in a magic circle law firm or working as a high street lawyer defending the rights of the common man.

My progression into a career in-house occurred via the classic ‘right time, right place’ scenario. After I finished my LPC at the University College of Wales, Cardiff Law School, I started work at the Welsh Office, which was conveniently placed opposite the Law College. While working as a paralegal with the Welsh Office I was offered a training contract, which I accepted, and the rest (as they say) is history. I would like to say that my careers advisers suggested I try and pursue a career in-house, but regrettably, all of the advice I received as an undergraduate steered my focus towards private practice.
