Shearman & Sterling is overhauling its management to bolster the international focus of its managing partner as current head Robert Treuhold prepares to step down to lead the top-10 US firm’s Paris arm.

The shake-up will see senior M&A partner John Madden become the first ever local managing partner for New York, allowing Treuhold’s successor as global head to concentrate on international strategy. One senior partner told Legal Week: “We needed someone to manage New York in order to take over a number of matters from the global managing partner. Unlike every other office, New York has never had a managing partner and it is important to bring that office in line with the rest of the network.”
