The Law Society’s ruling council has voted in principle to lift the ban on fee-sharing between lawyers and non-lawyers, in a move that paves the way for companies to offer legal services to their customers.

The move, at the society’s March council meeting, represents a major u-turn for the ruling council which has been dragging its feet over plans to allow companies such as Tesco and the RAC, both of which have expressed an interest in offering legal services, to provide legal advice to their clients – the so-called ‘supermarket law’ option.
