If you are daunted by the fees of a full-time postgraduate course, there is an alternative – to learn as you earn and to study part-time in the evenings or at weekends. Apart from easing the cash flow, it has many other advantages, and weekend study ‘block release’ courses in particular are becoming oversubscribed.

Emma Coles, aged 28, is a typical example. Seven years ago she was studying law at the University of the West of England in Bristol. She had neither the money nor the desire to go on to do the legal practice course (LPC) at that time. But she got a job as a secretary at a single fee earner law firm in Worthing which has since grown to have four other fee earners.
