The Law Society is set to rubberstamp a wide-ranging relaxation of client conflict rules at the end of the year which will, for the first time, give approval to law firms setting up of so-called ‘Chinese walls’ information barriers.

The proposed new rules – which have been three years in the making – aim to bring the UK professional conduct rules in line with the less restrictive rules in Europe and will, in certain instances, permit law firms to act against existing clients without their knowledge.
