Germany’s hopes of building a leading legal market for high growth companies have been dealt a major blow following the news that the country’s much criticised Neuer Markt is to close.

Deutsche Boerse announced last week that it was to wind up the index in 2003, relocating the remaining listed companies to the DAX and MDAX indexes following two years of plunging investor
confidence in the technology-dominated exchange.
The move has already lead to fears of the impact on major German technology centres such as Munich, which is home to many Neuer Markt-listed companies.
