Richards Butler has won its appeal against a High Court verdict that would have forced it to withdraw from a major arbitration on the grounds that one of its lawyers could have disclosed confidential information about the opposing side.

The case, which legal experts feared could have put pressure on law firms to avoid hiring senior lawyers, centred on an arbitration between longstanding Richards Butler shipping client Ariadne Maritime and Koch Shipping, which was represented by niche shipping firm Jackson Parton.
