Plans for the modernisation of the civil courts system have been thrown into doubt after Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown this week said that the extra £600m in funding allocated to legal services over the next four years will be focused on reform of the criminal justice system.

The Government’s spending review, announced on Monday (15 July), earmarked a total of £2.9bn in funding for three of the departments under the Lord Chancellor Lord Irvine’s control in the year 2002-03, up from £2.7bn the previous year.
