A high profile attempt to water down legal professional privilege failed last week as the House of Lords overturned a Court of Appeal ruling giving the Inland Revenue the right for access to legally privileged documents.
The case, R (Morgan Grenfell & Co Ltd) v Inland Revenue, concerned the investment bank’s refusal to reveal confidential legal documents concerning a property transaction to the Revenue’s tax inspectors.
