More than 130 in-house legal departments in the US, including the Department of Justice, could be obliged to find a replacement for the case management system they rely on to organise, file and retrieve their matters.

The system is one of the most popular in-house systems of its kind in the States. According to Hummingbird’s website, users include more than 30 of the Fortune 100 and 13 of the Dow Industrial 30 companies, as well as “numerous large government agencies” such as the State Corporation Commission of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The US Department of Justice last year alone is believed to have spent about $1m (£698,666) installing the LawPack system.
