A Bar Disciplinary Tribunal’s decision to convict Gordon Pringle of intentional racism and to suspend him from practice for a year deserves examination. Pringle behaved offensively, and his unwillingness to accept this (he referred to jesting, post-modernist style) shows a need for race awareness training.

Pringle faced 10 charges. He was convicted of two. The complainant was a solicitor’s clerk, Eric Adusei. He previously worked with Pringle defending various clients. The first charge was that Pringle had referred to him using the term “coons”. The tribunal found that Adusei “could have been in error in his recollection”.
