“I think of a black man, born in poverty, who became chief of their armed forces and is now secretary of state… and I wonder, frankly, whether such a thing could have happened here…” Beamed live to the world via the Labour Party conference in Brighton, Tony Blair spoke these words on 2 October.
What do you think the chances would be of a black man, born in similar circumstances in the UK, making it to partner of a City law firm? Or becoming Lord Chancellor? And, in this post 11 September world, do questions like these matter more or less? Those questions I leave with you to ponder.
