It is unfortunate that the issue of aspirational targets has been raised recently as an apparent attack on the views of the Law Society towards pro bono work, and particularly as it was suggested that the Solicitors’ Pro Bono Group (SPBG) were the group asking for aspirational targets.

In fact the paper had come from the executive committee of the Law Society itself. The mission of the SPBG remains to support, encourage and motivate the pro bono effort, not to act in a counter-productive fashion.
As director of the SPBG, I am setting my own target – to encourage and support the recruitment of 1,000 pro bono volunteer lawyers over the next three years in order to establish the LawWorks and LawWorks/community programmes across the country.
