San Francisco-headquartered Pillsbury Madison & Sutro and New York firm Winthrop Stimson Putnam & Roberts plan to expand in London after agreeing to their merger which will create a top 10 US firm by size.

The combined firm, to be called Pillsbury Winthrop, will have 820 lawyers spread across a network of 16 offices, including a 10-lawyer office in London.
John White, a partner in Winthrops’ London office, said the combined firm’s larger platform would allow it to steadily build its City practice, which opened more than 30 years ago and now has two partners and 10 fee earners.
