Tributes from the legal profession and beyond are pouring in after the announcement Tuesday that Roy McMurtry, a legend in Canadian politics and the legal profession, had died. He was 91.

A respected lawyer, politician, diplomat and judge, McMurtry served as chief justice of Ontario, Canada’s largest court system, for 11 years until his retirement in 2007. He was first appointed to the bench in 1991 and rose to become chief justice of the Ontario Superior Court before being appointed chief justice of the province and the Ontario Court of Appeal in 1996.
