Here’s a fun stat: Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is older than the nation of America. Founded 280 years ago, the law firm has a good few decades on what was once dubbed the ‘New World’.

But it has taken until now for the longstanding legal adviser to the Bank of England to really take America seriously. Like the rest of the U.K. elite, Freshfields missed the window to secure a merger with a top U.S. counterpart prior to the financial crisis when the pound was strong and most U.S. firms had not gained credible market share across the U.K. and Europe.
