AI and tech are proving more of a headache than a help for law firms right now. Yes, it’s intriguing seeing firms like Allen & Overy get ahead of the pack with AIs like Harvey. But lawyers are at pains to figure out whether new tech presents more opportunity than risk. Because right now, it’s about 50/50.

I spoke to a lawyer in New York earlier this year who said that they’d prefer to go back to “papers and pens”. “Call me a luddite,” they said. They were being tongue-in-cheek, of course, but all the same it’s easy to see why some folks want a return to the low risk simplicity of ink and A4.
